More than $12,000 in awards will be given at the opening reception in various categories and to honor past SAALM members. This includes the prestigious Onderdonk Purchase Prize Award of $3,000 in honor of Julian Onderdonk, a San Antonio native who studied under William Merritt Chase. Onderdonk’s work has been celebrated by Presidents and Museums alike, including an exhibit at the San Antonio Art Museum in 2017.
The Exhibition’s corporate sponsors include Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Herweck’s Art Supply, Art Gallery Prudencia and La Fonda on Main.

With a storied history of the Edgar B. Davis collection amassed from competitions held in the late 1920s, SAALM has a venerable reputation of showing some of the finest artwork Texas artists have to offer. Including this year’s annual exhibition representing artists from San Antonio, Dallas-Ft Worth, Houston, Austin, San Marcos, Corpus Christi and places in-between.
“Curiosity and inquiry are illustrated through pieces that are introspective, outwardly expressive or evoke emotion – sometimes sharing a narrative,” states the juror for the exhibition Leah Hardy, MFA, an art professor from the University of Wyoming. Harding added, “Several pieces invite us directly to contemplate social issues such as PTSD and abuse, history, gender identity or global crises such as climate change. Other works celebrate and acknowledge long-standing traditions of documenting everyday life through portraiture, landscape and still-life.”
